Transcultures, Užiateka, European Pepinieres of Creation and Ideas Block present City Sonic Vilnius Soundcamp, a sound art workshop at Kompresoriné/ Ideas Block (Vilnius) featuring participants from Lithuania.
Coordination by Belgian and French sound/intermedia artists Philippe Franck (alias Paradise Now – Fr/Be), Tommy Lawson (Tg/Fr), Christian Vialard (Fr).
This workshop inspired by the sonic life of the city, will give birth to a visual and sound arts exhibition & performances by Lithuanian and international artists.
During this workshop and through the diverse sounds of Vilnius city, the participants will learn, explore and share their collective or individual creations in collaboration with French sound artists to the Vilnius public to experience a new perspective of the city. This Sound Camp is also about promoting collaboration between artists of different practices and aesthetics, always starting from their energy, their desire, and their creativity.
The events will take place in Kompresorinė Cultural Center, open for interdisciplinary projects. The venue holds an ambisonic sound system which can also be used in the City Sonic Sound Camp. The technical crew will be ready to support the participants.
City Sonic Vilnius team is going to support most of the traveling, accommodation, meals, materials and equipment costs.
« Sound Camp » workshop
- The participants will first work on the sound recording (field recording) in the city of Vilnius, which can evolve into situations invented and constructed on the spot.
- Each place can be documented in its sonic characteristics or become a basis for the elaboration of a form of a poetic story or a small fiction inspired by the area and its inhabitants.
- The audio recordings will be the material that can be processed or reinvented in the studio.
- What we are interested in here is to be able to put a form of presence and attention to the urban environment as well as its metamorphosis into resonance and listening, and also to reveal, with the help of sound (or possibly the image of sound) certain particular places in the city of Vilnius but also strange and poetic situations.

« Sound Camp » Exhibition
At the end of 5 days of workshops and joint intensive experiences, an exhibition is planned with a sound (listening to the finalized creative works) and with a visual (a photographic, video, graphic, or multimedia look at the process and the images of this sound experience) component, as well as with sound performances (notably by the 3 guest creators-coordinators-curators, and also by Lithuanian artists).
Finally, in the coming weeks after this first City Sonic Vilnius Sound Camp, it is planned to publish the issues and final creations of the participants in audio, on the web, and in the form of printed materials.
Philippe Franck (aka Paradise Now - Be)
Intermedia producer and creator based in Belgium, Philippe Franck has developed since the 90s the Paradise Now project which favors an actively transversal and collaborative approach. He favors a sensitive and cinematic approach that embraces different influences and fields (electronics, sound art, post-rock, post-pop, improvised music …).
He has worked closely with various videographers (Régis Cotentin, Hanzel & Gretzel), poets (Ira Cohen, Gerard Malanga, Catrine Godin, Biba Sheikh, Werner Moron in Les ours bipolaires, Eric Therer for the project & Stuff), choreographers (Nadine Ganase , Manon Oligny, Karine Ledoyen), digital artists (Philippe Boisnard, Franck Soudan, Jacques Urbanska, Thomas Israël) and other adventurous audio creators (recently Christophe Bailleau within the duo Pastoral, Gauthier Keyaerts in Supernova, Stephan Dunkelman, Maurice Charles JJ, A Limb).
Since 2005, he has also collaborated with holistic performer / masseuse Isa Belle for a series of installations and « sound » performances shown in numerous festivals, cultural centers and international events. He has also produced and participated in several records on various independent labels (Sub Rosa, Optical Sound, Transonic…). In 2022, he began a doctoral thesis in Information and Communication Sciences (Cognition, language, interaction) at the University of Paris 8 (CiTu Paragrahe), under the dual supervision of Khaldoun Zreik (Paris8) and Marc Veyrat (University of Savoie Mont Blanc).
Tommy Lawson (Fr)
Sound artist, sound designer, digital art performer, Tommy Lawson is also a producer and curator of events for the promotion of electronic music. He develops projects combining electronic and electroacoustic music. Deeply attached to the idea of transversality between the arts, he produces numerous music/sound pieces and soundtracks interacting with visual/video arts and contemporary dance. He develops in collaboration with Armand Lesecq tools for digital audio creations and computer lutherie in the field of sound spatialization. He regularly carries out geolocated sound walks towards the public in order to allow them to live an augmented sound experience in connection with the intangible heritage of a territory. He is at the initiative of the first video mapping carried out in Corsica with the Tunisian collective Design Lab on the occasion of the reopening of the Bastia museum in 2009 of a series of video mapping as part of the European Heritage Days.
In 2008, he created Zone Libre, a structure dedicated to creation, production and distribution through which he has organized the eponymous Festival of Sound Arts since 2019, between art, science and new technologies. This event of support for creation emphasizes the development of transdisciplinary and hypermedia experiences in the field of sound and visual arts.
Christian Vialard (Fr)
Sound and visual creator, Christian Vialard lives in Grasse on the French Riviera. His music speaks of the complexity of our contemporary world, of its multiple forms, its inconsistencies, its violence, but also about the richness of the people who live there. He uses analogue instruments and samplers specific to electronic music and electric guitars closer to post-punk and noise music.
He works with artists from different worlds, depending on the projects and encounters, for instance, with the writer Eric Arlix and the guitarist Serge Teyssot-Gay (ex Noir Désir) for the sonopoetic project Hypogé. His productions include sound installations, videos, paintings and sculptures which are shown in exhibitions and at international festivals.
He founded the experimental label Tiramizu in 2001.
Christian Vialard is in charge of teaching digital practices at the National School of Art in Nice, Villa Arson.
